Printed on the cover of the box is as follows: "Artist-Designed Service Plate by Roy Lichtenstein, USA: Dining on Pop Art: this service plate by Roy Lichtenstein - one of the leading exponents of modern American Art - quotes fragmentally from the artists own repertoire of pop Art Imagery. Lichtenstein combines the blow-up character of comic strips - primary colours, dots, bold outlines - with a colour scheme of blue and yellow, black and white, creating a perfectly decorated composition which fills the in ner circle of the plate, literally placing a work of abstract art in a culinary context. Seen in this way, the art of cooking takes on a double meaning - and the menu assumes a cultural significance somewhere between epicurean experience and artisti c expression".

The plate is supplied with a booklet which serves as a certificate and guarantee of authenticity. It is worth quoting from an extract in that booklet "Roy Lichtenstein Artist-designed service plate". When Roy Lichtenstein, whose work today counts among the classics of Pop Art, was asked over thirty years ago in 1963 how he would classify this new trend of ;painting he replied "..... in reality it is industrial painting . In my opinion the significance of my work lies in the fact that it is industrial" by Industrial Lichtenstein meant the kind of art which is in keeping with the machine age, an art based on absolute precision and clarity of form " "The style is cool" His statement clearly explains his active commitment to industrial design. His paintings , distinguished by their hard-edged, heavy outlined, extremely simplified half tine dotted images in primary colours, have stood the test of time. In creating this Rosent hal service plate, Lichtenstein has transferred his two dimensional painting to a three dimensional object so successfully that we do not at first glance realise how well the decoration matches the function. Here, Lichtenstein, has juxtaposed several comp Rosent letely disconnected graphic elements, but in such a way that a repeating pattern results, creating an effect of ornamentation. This effect is heightened still further when several service plates are combined in a table setting. Here they form one large anal comp d ever changing ornament for the entire table. The sheer clarity of the primary colours, red, yellow and blue contrasting strongly with black outlines and areas of white, creates the impression of the neatness and tidiness on the dining table but without arge an in any way detracting from the overall
